Dr Denia Gilheany BVSc, MANZCVS

Every Pet Farewell process - collection handling, the chain of care, and how we assess local partners - is set and reviewed by a practising Australian veterinarian.

A vet from cattle country

Denia graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2010 and started out as a mixed animal vet - dogs and cats in the consult room, horses and cattle on the road. She went on to focus on equine practice, and in 2017 passed the examinations to become a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Equine Medicine.

She has spent her career in regional Victoria with the Gippsland Veterinary Group, a practice that has served South Gippsland's farms and families since 1952 and remains owned by the vets who work in it. Her special interests are equine medicine and reproduction - examining and treating sick horses, and helping create the next generation of foals.

Outside the clinic she is the secretary of the Foster & District Agricultural Show and a volunteer at her local community hall. Home is three little girls, her vet husband Tom, two dogs, a cat, a horse, and some chooks and cows.

What Denia does at Pet Farewell

Sets the chain-of-care standard

The ID-tagging, two-person verification and one-pet-one-chamber rules on our how ashes are returned page follow the standards she sets for handling animals in her own practice.

Assesses local partners

Where Pet Farewell works with local collection and cremation partners, their facilities and processes are assessed against her veterinary qualifications checklist before we put our name to them.

Reviews our guidance

The practical guides on this site - like what to do when your dog dies at home - are reviewed for veterinary accuracy before publication.
