How to decide
One question settles it: do you want the ashes home? If yes, choose individual cremation. If you are at peace without them, communal is a dignified and more affordable farewell.
There is no deadline on the decision about keepsakes. Paw prints must be requested at booking (they are taken before cremation), but urn upgrades and ash jewellery can wait months.

How much more does private cremation cost?
Across the prices Australian providers publish, communal cremation is advertised from $80 and individual cremation has a median of $432. The gap is real, and it buys one thing: the ashes come back. If that does not matter to you, communal is a dignified choice and the money is better spent elsewhere.
How do I know my pet was really cremated alone?
Ask what identifies your pet at every step and whether you can see that record. It is worth asking properly: 5 of the Australian pet cremation reviews we classified describe a family who doubted whose ashes came back. A provider running individual cremation should be able to name a numbered tag that stays with your pet from collection to return, and tell you who checks it.
What does private pet cremation actually mean?
With us: the chamber holds one pet. Nothing else. In parts of the industry "private" can mean pets separated by space in a shared chamber, so always ask the provider directly: is my pet alone in the chamber?
Do I get ashes back with communal cremation?
No. With communal cremation several pets are cremated together and the ashes are respectfully scattered. You receive a memorial certificate. If getting the ashes back matters to you, you need individual cremation.
Is communal cremation a lesser choice?
No. It's a dignified, honest choice made by many families, and it costs less because it uses the chamber differently. The only thing to be certain of is that ashes are not returned.
Can I still get a paw print with communal cremation?
Yes. Paw and nose prints are taken before cremation, so they are available with either service. Ask at booking.
How do you prove the ashes are my pet with private cremation?
A stainless-steel ID tag assigned at collection, verified before and after cremation by two staff, sealed with the ashes and recorded on a signed certificate. You can also attend the cremation at no extra cost.

Most providers will not tell you a price
Of the 100 Australian pet cremation providers we surveyed, only 36 publish what the cremation costs. The other 64 ask you to ring and explain what has happened before they will say.
9 of them will sell you an urn online, with the price on the product page, while still making you call to learn the price of the thing you came for. That is the part of this industry we think is worth changing, and it is why the numbers above are on this page at all.
